Intro

A Philosophical Lens to Computer Science

My academic path began with a focus on consciousness and ethics during my undergraduate studies in Philosophy at Trinity, culminating in a thesis on the ethical challenges of human-equivalent artificial intelligence. I then built on that foundation with an MSc in Computer Science at UCD, pairing theory with a practical toolkit. The result is a unique skill set that blends lateral thinking with hands-on engineering, and I’m excited to apply it to new challenges.

Background

I first studied Philosophy, where my work focused on Consciousness, Ethics, and Morality. I have had an interest in Artificial Intelligence since this degree, where I wrote my thesis on a proposed ethical framework for the introduction human-equivalent AI into society. That logical foundation led me to pursue an MSc in Computer Science, which would allow me to pair abstract thinking and my unique background with practical engineering skills and tools.

Recently, I've become particularly interested in how modern AI technologies can be used to further increase productivity, regarding its application in human-centred AI framework as an additive tool rather than a replacement for individuals. In my final semester at UCD, I took modules which focussed on the fundamentals of AI, its relationship to people, and current novel directions the technology is taking.

Though AI was my initial interest, I now primarily view it as a strong asset for any area of Computer Science, from Cybersecurity to Software engineering. Similarly, I have a broad interest in many areas of Computer Science, and I have strong fundamentals in them from my experience in my MSc. As such, I am ready to explore a multitude of different fields wherever the opportunity may arise, and I am equally eager to showcase my ability with new challenges. I feel that the fact I have moved from such disparate fields as Philosophy to Computer Science, and have done well in both, shows that I have the ability to succeed in any field. I would love to have the opportunity to prove this!
